Meta Tags: The Free 60-Second SEO Win You're Missing
Title tags and meta descriptions are the first impression Google gives users in search results. Open Graph tags are how your link looks on Facebook and LinkedIn. Twitter Cards control X (Twitter). Getting these right is the cheapest SEO upgrade you can do.
The four meta tags that move the needle
- <title>, 50 to 60 characters. The clickable headline in Google. Keyword early, brand at the end.
- Meta description, 150 to 160 characters. The grey snippet below the title. Doesn't directly affect ranking, but a good one doubles your click-through rate.
- Open Graph tags:
og:title,og:description,og:image. Controls how your page looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack, iMessage. - Twitter Cards:
twitter:card, twitter:image. Controls X / Twitter previews. If missing, X falls back to Open Graph, but a dedicatedsummary_large_imagecard looks much better.
Title tag rules that actually work
- Put the most important keyword in the first 30 characters.
- Match search intent, if someone searches "best CRM software", a title saying "CRM Software Comparison: Top 10 Tools in 2026" outperforms "We Sell CRM Software".
- Add a year or a number when it makes sense, "11 Tips", "in 2026" can lift CTR 15%+.
- Avoid ALL CAPS, makes Google more likely to rewrite your title.
What a great Open Graph image looks like
- 1200 x 630 pixels (the Facebook standard).
- Under 1 MB, ideally WebP or JPG.
- Big, readable text if you add words (it's often rendered small in feeds).
- Branded but not loud, the link below it is what people read first.
