How Domain Authority Actually Affects Your Rankings

Domain Authority is a predictive score (0 to 100) for how well a domain is likely to rank. Higher DA usually means stronger backlink profile, older domain, better content reputation. Compare your DA to competitors before you commit to a keyword.

What the score is built from

  • Linking root domains, how many unique sites link to yours.
  • Quality of those domains, one link from BBC counts more than 100 from random blogs.
  • Trust signals, age, HTTPS, no spam-style behaviour, stable hosting.
  • Comparative position, the score is calibrated against the rest of the web, so improvements get harder as you climb.

Use cases

  1. Competitor benchmarking. If your DA is 25 and competitors ranking for your target keyword all have DA 60+, pick easier keywords first.
  2. Outreach prioritisation. When asking for backlinks, target sites with DA above yours. A link from a DA 45 site to your DA 20 site is worth multiple links from DA 15 sites.
  3. Tracking growth. Check monthly. Steady upward movement (1 to 3 points per quarter on a young site) means your link-building is working.
Compare two domains in our tool to see who has the edge. Useful before a backlink outreach campaign, before pitching a partnership, or before committing to compete for a keyword.

Frequently asked

Is DA the same as PageRank?
No, but they're related concepts. PageRank is Google's internal score (no longer public). DA is a third-party estimate. Movement in one usually mirrors the other.
Can my DA go down?
Yes. Common reasons: losing high-quality backlinks, gaining lots of low-quality ones, or the algorithm being recalibrated (Moz updates DA quarterly).
Should I obsess over DA?
No. Treat it as one signal among many. Real-world rankings, organic traffic, and conversions matter far more than a third-party score.
