Why Google Ignores Some of Your Backlinks
A backlink only counts once Google has crawled the page it sits on and decided to index it. Plenty of real links never get counted, and understanding why saves you from chasing the wrong fix.
Reasons a genuine link never registers
- The linking page is not indexed. No index, no signal. This is by far the most common cause.
- The page is buried. Deep in a site with no internal links pointing at it, so Google rarely crawls it.
- It is blocked. robots.txt or a noindex tag on the linking page.
- The link is rendered by JavaScript only after interaction, so Google never sees it.
- The site is low trust. Google crawls low-authority sites infrequently and may discount them.
- It is inside a redirect chain that loses the signal along the way.
Legitimate ways to help a link get discovered
- Share the linking page. Social distribution genuinely speeds up crawling.
- Link to it yourself from a page of yours that Google crawls often, where that makes editorial sense.
- Ask the site owner to link it internally. A page linked from their homepage or a hub gets crawled far sooner.
- Be patient. Discovery on a small site can genuinely take weeks.
How to check whether a link counts
Search the linking page's exact URL in Google. If it returns nothing, the page is not indexed and the link is currently doing nothing for you. Then look at whether that page has internal links pointing at it, since that is usually the real problem.
