Searchlab vs Semrush vs Ahrefs, honestly
An honest, feature-by-feature breakdown. Where free SEO tools genuinely match the paid ones, and where they don't. Written by someone who's used all three.
Yes, we make Searchlab. We're going to try really hard to be honest anyway, because pretending Semrush isn't excellent at certain things would insult your time. Here's the real breakdown.
The summary first
- Searchlab wins on: technical audits, one-button master scans, free price, no signup friction.
- Semrush wins on: keyword research depth, competitor tracking, agency reporting, training resources.
- Ahrefs wins on: backlink index size, content explorer, site audit depth.
If you're a freelancer or indie team paying $99-$499/mo for SEO tools, you can probably replace 80% of that with Searchlab. If you're an agency running 50 client sites, you'll still want Semrush or Ahrefs for the reporting alone.
Keyword research
Semrush: wins. Its keyword database is enormous (24+ billion keywords), the difficulty score is reliable, and the SERP analysis is deep.
Ahrefs: very close second. Slightly weaker on volumes, slightly better on SERP context.
Searchlab: our Keyword Position, Keyword Difficulty, and Long-tail tools cover the everyday use case. If your job is to find 50 keywords for a content calendar, we're fine. If your job is to spy on a competitor's full 10,000-keyword profile, get Semrush.
Site audits
Searchlab: wins for one-off scans. Our Master Tool runs 16+ checks in 60 seconds, no setup. The output is clearer for non-technical clients.
Ahrefs: wins for continuous crawling. Schedules, alerts, full historical record.
Semrush: middle of the pack on audits, better on the reporting layer.
Backlink data
Ahrefs: wins, by a lot. The index is bigger and fresher than anyone else's.
Semrush: solid second.
Searchlab: we use a smaller third-party index plus our own crawl. Good for spot-checks and our Web Mentions Finder tool. Not a replacement for Ahrefs if you do agency-grade backlink work.
Competitor tracking
Semrush: wins. The dashboards, the alerting, the comparison views.
Searchlab: not really our beat. We give you point-in-time data, not continuous tracking.
Pricing reality
| Plan | Searchlab | Semrush Pro | Ahrefs Lite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $0 | $129.95 | $129 |
| Annual | $0 | $1,395 | $1,290 |
| Hidden upsells | None — Searchlab Pro adds 3rd-party SaaS access, not features | Add-on per project, per user | Limited users, limited projects |
The honest recommendation
- Solo founder, freelancer, blogger: use Searchlab. The free tier covers it. Add Semrush only if you outgrow it.
- SEO consultant: Searchlab for the day-to-day, Semrush or Ahrefs for the deep dives. Use both.
- Agency with 20+ client sites: Semrush or Ahrefs, no question. Their reporting infrastructure is what you're really paying for.
- In-house SEO at a SaaS company: Ahrefs (for the backlinks data) + Searchlab (for technical audits clients can read).
That's the honest take. The free tools have caught up on a lot. The paid tools still win where they always have — at scale and at depth.
